Austin Lakes - Getting there...

From Perth, you travel south on the Kwinana Freeway, which becomes the Forrest Highway. Approximately 50 minutes from the Narrows Bridge in Perth, you will come to the Pinjarra Road exit. Leave the highway at Pinjarra Rd, and turn left.

In just a few minutes, this road will take you passed the Ravenswood Hotel on your left, and you will cross the Murray River. About 500m after crossing the river, there is a set of traffic lights at South Yunderup Rd. at which you turn right.

South Yunderup Rd takes you back under the Forrest Hwy. Once you have travelled under the bridge, you will come to a roundabout, at which you turn left onto Inlet Boulevard. The lake is about a 1 minute drive up Inlet Bvd.

Accommodation

The closest and best accommodation is at the Lakeside Apartments and River Resort. This is located off South Yunderup Rd on Murray Drive. Two and three bedroom apartments are available at reasonable cost. The website is https://www.lakesideholidayapartments.com.au/

Mention sure that you are with the radio sailing group when making your booking.

Alternative accommodation can be found at the Pinjarra Caravan Park in Pinjarra. There are onsite cabins or van sites. The website is http://www.pinjarracaravanpark.com.au/

The park is well maintained and has a very friendly atmosphere.

Social

Just 100 metres from the Lakeside Apartments is Jettys Bar and Grill – the local pub. They are in a fantastic location on the banks of the Murray river, and do good meals at pub prices. This is often the gathering place after sailing and we will have the regatta dinner here on Saturday night. Leave the car – the walk home will do you good.

On Friday night, the local South Yunderup Sports Club have a dinner available, so we will meet there for drinks and a social night out with the locals. Bar prices are very reasonable, and it is a really friendly place. If there is enough interest, they might even put on a bare-foot bowls night.

On other nights, there are BBQ facilities at the Lakeside Apartments, so informal BBQs in the pool area are on the cards.

Make a Holiday of It!

Western Australia’s south west is a holiday makers dream. If you are coming all this way, take a few days and discover the wonders of Margaret River – world famous wine region, foodies paradise, forests and caves, art galleries, and if you are not convinced already – the famous Margaret River Chocolate Factory.

If you have a bit more time, make your way down to the Great Southern – Albany, Denmark, Walpole. Albany is definitely worth a trip, especially with its history of whaling and as a centre of Anzac history. The Anzac museum is really worth a visit.

If you haven’t been to Perth before, spending a bit of time in the city is worthwhile too. Perth’s beaches are brilliant. A visit to Perth isn’t complete unless you go over to Rotto – Rottnest Island day trips are great. Alternatively, you might like to get on a wine cruise up the river to the Swan Valley – and you can be assured of a raucous trip home!
